Happy 2020!

January 4, 2020 by Jenna

Happy 2020! It’s a new year and a new decade. The thought of a new year always fills me with hope and excitement. I love looking back at the previous year (or decade in this case) to find some inspiration and intentions for the year to come.

The 2010’s

2010 was a big year for me. I remember dubbing it “The Year of Jenna” and it turned out to be a huge turning point in my life. I got into running and baking, two hobbies that completely changed my life. I made & strengthened some fierce, life-long friendships with women who continue to inspire me today. I learned that I was an independent, strong person.

The things I learned and did in 2010 helped build the foundation for the person I am today.

Now, here we are 10 years later and I can’t move forward without looking back first.

Here’s a brief look at the big things that happened in the 2010’s:

  • I learned that I was obsessed with baking.
  • I started this blog.
  • I learned that I was obsessed with running.
  • I ran 7 (or 8?) half marathons, 5 full marathons, and 2 Ragnar Relays.
After my 2nd marathon in Duluth, MN (2013)
  • I joined running related organizations – City Running Tours, Marketing Committee for the Twin Cities Marathon, and Colorado Brewery Running Series.
  • I moved from Tennessee to Minnesota and then from Minnesota to Colorado.
  • I bought and sold a condo in Minneapolis.
  • I opened my heart and had it broken.
  • I learned that I was obsessed with hiking and backpacking.
  • I backpacked the Inca Trail in Peru and the Superior Hiking Trail in northern Minnesota and have gone on other unforgettable hikes and backpacking adventures in Colorado, Utah, Montana, Wyoming, and Washington.
Michael and I backpacking in Canyonlands for my birthday (2018)
  • I visited a few National Parks: Yellowstone, Glacier, Grand Tetons, Canyonlands, Arches, Rocky Mountain, North Cascades, and Crater Lake.
  • I hiked up to the top of 8 14ers.
My first two 14er’s with this group of amazing women (2016)
  • I became friends with some of the most interesting and inspiring people.
  • I learned that I did’t have to wash and dry my hair everyday.
  • I became a certified personal trainer.
  • I worked at General Mills and Noosa Yoghurt and am currently at VF Corporation all within Supply Chain.
  • I went on 10 international trips with Natalie.
Surfing with Natalie in Costa Rica (2014)
  • I wrote for Minneapolis Running and for The Trek.
  • I learned how to ski and snowshoe.
  • I went on fun weekend trips to places like San Fransisco, Napa, Atlanta, Nashville, Denver, Austin, New Orleans, Portland, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Boston, and Seattle.
Katie, Ellie, and I in Napa, CA (2012)
  • I found out that I had some pretty serious heart problems.
  • I went into cardiac arrest, got an internal defibrillator, had open heart surgery, found out I had a blood clot, had a cardiac ablation, thought I was good-to-go, and then found out I wasn’t.
  • I had dreams of hiking the Pacific Crest Trail that were thwarted (twice) by my heart problems.
  • I gained a sister-in-law, brother-in-law, niece, and nephew.
Play date with my little niece and nephew (2019)
  • I lost two grandparents.
  • I met the man of my dreams.
  • I got engaged to the man of my dreams.
This was from our engagement shoot (along with the cover photo) by Nathan Bauman (2019)

In between those moments I also laughed so hard I cried, I experienced times I was so happy I thought I might burst, I cried a lot, I had some very low, dark moments that still hurt to think about, I ate some of the most delicious food, I celebrated fun moments with friends and family, I went to a lot of weddings, I started planning my own wedding, I gained and lost weight, I tried and failed at a lot of things, I tried and succeeded at a lot of things, I was lazy, I challenged myself, I grew.

2020

I was 22 at the turn on the 2010’s. I was half a year out of college, so young and excited about the future. Life was easy and full of all the opportunities. I set goals and worked to achieve them. Ten years later at 32 with some additional life experience under my belt, I’m still young and excited about the future, but my outlook is slightly different. I’m going to work to regain some of that 22 year old’s zest for life.

We are less than a week in, but so far 2020 has been awesome. I finally learned to accept what I can’t change and already feel significantly lighter and happier. I am so, soooooo excited to see what this year will bring.

Here are my intentions for 2020:

  • Self-Discovery. I have never focused on self-discovery before, but I’d like it to be a big part of my life this year. I’m not exactly sure how I’m going to do this yet, but practicing gratitude and indulging in self-discovery-related books and podcasts are on the list. If you have been on a similar journey, please send me tips!
  • Hobbies. Running and hiking used to be such a giant part of my life. I can’t really do those things right now (although I hope to be able to by the summer!), so I need to discover some new hobbies in the mean time that will drive and inspire me. I plan to start baking again (primarily healthy treats), since it always gives me a lot of joy. Also, Michael and I are hoping to start fly fishing, which I am really excited about. It’ll be a great way for us to get outside together until I can dive back into hiking.
  • More Plants. I already do a good job of eating a lot of veggies. I love them! This year I would like to focus on eating more plant-based foods and less meat, primarily for environmental reasons. Somewhat related, I would also like to fill my house with more plants.
  • Move. I will be completely off my anti-arrhythmia medication this week, so my exercise methods will be super limited, because I can’t get my heart rate above 110 bpm (per my doctor) until I recover from my ablation in March. That doesn’t mean I can’t move. I’ll be able to go on walks, do yoga, barre, pilates, and simple strength training. Just because I can’t do anything intense doesn’t mean I can’t do anything! Then, once I recover from my surgery, I’ll be able to slowly pick up the intensity.
  • Stretch. Stretching will be a part of my New Year’s intentions now and forever. I can always use some more stretching! And water. And sleep.

2019 Goals: the Pacific Crest Trail and the Colorado Trail

January 10, 2019 by Jenna

Let’s talk a little about 2019 goals.

2019 goals: PCT & CT

I am not talking about resolutions or intentions or little things I want to change about myself. I am talking cold, hard goals. SMART goals. Things that I am going to do everything in my power to achieve.

My 2019 Goals

2019 goals: PCT & CT

Here they are:

  1. Hike the Pacific Crest Trail
  2. Hike the Colorado Trail

If everything goes correctly that would be over 3,100 miles of backpacking!

I get so excited just thinking about it.

The Pacific Crest Trail

2019 goals: PCT & CT

For those of you that are unfamiliar with the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), it is a long-distance hiking trail that travels 2,650 miles from Mexico to Canada through California, Oregon, and Washington.

Michael and I have a permit to start hiking on April 18, my 32nd birthday. We hope to finish the PCT in 120 days, estimating that we’ll probably take about 14 “zero” days (days that we don’t hike) and average 25 miles per day on the days that we do hike. It might be a little aggressive, but I think we can do it!

The Colorado Trail

2019 goals: PCT & CT

The Colorado Trail is another long-distance trail. This one starts at Waterton Canyon, southwest of Denver, and travel 486 miles to Durango, Colorado – a shorty compared to the PCT.

We will start this after we finish the PCT and get back to Colorado, probably around September 1. Right now we don’t have a specific time goal for the Colorado Trail, but it will probably take us 3-4 weeks.

Initially Michael just brought the Colorado Trail up as a joke, but the more we joked about it the more serious we became and soon realized that it was a great idea.

We’ll already have the time off of work. We’ll both be in really good hiking shape and have all the gear we need. Monsoon season will be over and we’ll get to hike through peak fall colors.

Sooo… give me a reason not to do it.

Training

2019 goals: PCT & CT

I am planning to post training updates here on Just J. Faye, not necessarily because I think you’ll be interested, but rather because I think posting my training will help hold myself accountable.

Ideally I would my weekly training would include a solid mix of running, hiking, other cardio (elliptical, rowing, stairmill, etc), strength training, and stretching.

Other Things

2019 goals: PCT & CT

Of course I do have some resolutions and intentions and small things that I want to change about myself too. Would it even be January if I didn’t?!

  • Stretch more and do yoga at least twice per month
  • Learn calligraphy
  • Journal on a more consistent basis
  • Do a better job at reaching out to / catching up with friends and family
  • Spend money smarter, AKA only on things that I actually need

Follow Along!

2019 goals: PCT & CT

I hope you follow along during the training, planning, and hiking! You can follow me on Instagram here and you can follow Michael here. His pictures are way better than mine.

We’ll also be posted periodic articles on The Trek. You can check out our latest about this 2-for-1 thru-hiking experience here.

What are your goals/resolutions/intentions for the year? Please share!

The Things in 2015

December 31, 2015 by Jenna

Happy last day of 2015!!

2015 Things

Are you a New Year’s Eve person? I totally am. I love the hype and the sparkles and the champagne and the reflecting and the thoughts of a promising new year to come and the singing of Auld Lang Syne. I feel like I always overhype it and really shouldn’t be that into it, but I am. I love New Year’s Eve like I love birthdays: a lot.

One of my favorite things to do each year is to sit down and write out the significant memories and accomplishments that occurred over the year. It’s a fun exercise.

Here are the biggies for 2015:

  • Took a mother/daughter trip to California where we wine tasted and had a blast.
  • Celebrated Just J.Faye’s 1-year blogiversary!
  • Crossed the finish line with my mom while she conquered her first half marathon, the Fargo Half Marathon in Fargo, ND.
  • Experienced annoying heart arrhythmia issues while running, so I wore an attractive heart monitor device for a few weeks. Luckily everything turned out fine.
  • Completed my 4th marathon, Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, MN.
  • Hiked the Inca Trail, explored Machu Picchu, and hung out in Cusco and Lima, Peru for the 6th annual JenNat trip.
  • Quit my career at General Mills after being there for 6 years.
  • Made the major decision to leave Minneapolis and move to Denver with my dear friend Katie.
  • Broke my wrist after tripping on the sidewalk while running during my second day living in Denver.
  • Worked as a waitress at Blackbird before deciding to make a full-time career change into personal training at 24 Hour Fitness.
  • Went to Maroon Bells and saw the gorgeous fall colors.
  • Bought a ski pass and skis and went skiing for the second time in my life, something that needs to happen much more in 2016.
  • Sold my condo two months after it was originally supposed to close (and after I had a meltdown).
  • Freaked out with joy when my sister got engaged.
  • Posted 37 recipes, 23 workouts, and 63 random fun things.

That was a lot of things and only really scratched the surface. Most of them happy, a few of them bittersweet, and a couple of them really not so great. Two of the things were pretty giant: change in city and change in career.

While I am happy to be living in Denver I feel like I am still trying to figure out my life here – my routine, my groove, my identity. Maybe that’s all part of the fun of it though, figuring everything out? This is primarily what I think about when I run.

So anyways, other than the majors, 2015 was filled with ups, downs, tears, fears, smiles, laughs, jokes, new friends, family time, heartbreaks, runs, races, crafts, texts, emails, pictures, worries, cookies, wine, funny things, early mornings, late nights, hellos, goodbyes, and see-ya-laters.

Pretty standard stuff.

2015 memories

^^^ 12 of my favorite pictures/memories of 2015.

And now let’s start thinking about 2016, shall we?

Some of my 2016 goals:

  • Career: Consistently hit 120 sessions trained per month (AKA: full-time status as a trainer). Continue to learn, learn, learn about anything fitness related.
  • Fitness: Do a triathalon. Maybe run another marathon, but maybe not. And as always, incorporate a lot more yoga and stretching into my life.
  • Travel: Plan the 7th annual JenNat trip, potentially to Thailand or Vietnam. Travel domestically to Austin, New Orleans, and/or Portland with some trips to Minnesota.
  • Colorado: Ski, hike, and camp as much as possible!
  • Just J.Faye: Grow it. Learn more about photography, recipe development, and SEO. Also, up my networking game.

Basically, I want to hustle and have the courage (and energy) to go after the things that I want to accomplishment.

And that’s that! I hope you celebrate the last day of 2015 with an awesome workout, festive cupcakes, champagne, and a lot of wonderful people.

Cheers!

My open heart surgery was 7 years ago and it’s an My open heart surgery was 7 years ago and it’s an anniversary I will never not celebrate.

I carried a lot of trauma with me for a long time. I was nervous for every hike, every workout, religiously checking my heart rate, wondering if this would be the time my heart fails me again. Very dramatic, I know. But I kept at it, doing these things I love to do, working through the fear. Now the intrusive thoughts are few and far between.

So here I am 7 years later, a stronger person both physically and mentally, hanging out at the top of a mountain with my babies after a nice, challenging hike. It’s all I really want.

I’m so grateful for this life and for the people who continue to support me ❤️
